Artificial Intelligence is our future.

Artificial intelligence, what is this? A fancy definition: The basic concept of Artificial intelligence surrounds the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. My interest in Artificial intelligence first peaked after watching a presentation by IBM on "Watson". Then came Siri and Google Now, my interest now at an all time high, so elevated I thinking of pursuing this field at the post grad level because I believe AI is the future.

Video depicting Watson:

A Brief introduction to Watson (Wikipedia)

Watson is an artificial intelligence computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language, developed in IBM's DeepQA project by a research team led by principal investigator David Ferrucci. Watson was named after IBM's first president, Thomas J. Watson. The machine was specifically developed to answer questions on the quiz show Jeopardy!. In 2011, Watson competed on Jeopardy against former winners Brad Rutter, and Ken Jennings. Watson received the first prize of $1 million.

Siri & Google Now

I'm sure we all know about Apple's Siri introduced in 2011 along with the iPhone 4S. Sold as a personal assistant, where questions and instructions are processed within it's knowledge scope returning the best possible answer. Google however took the opportunity to take this approach one step further with Google Now. The next step they took was prediction. Processing the users habits, emails, flight details etc then present a holistic view of what is going on in the user's life.

The future

Wrap your mind around this for a minute, a computer that can listen to a question, process it and return an answer. This may seem simple because of how it's presented by the likes of Apple, IBM and Google but it's a huge leap forward. The possibilities here are endless. Yes I know the end of days fear where computers take control of the world but let's pause of fears for just a second. Take a minute and step into my fantasy of the future. An AI system in your home that learns your habits and make suggestions to you. Imagine a system that learns your sleeping habits and adjusts your bed to suit. Let's dive deeper, imagine a device you wear that monitors your system and suggest a doctors check up based on it's perception of what's going on in your system. Crazy right? I don't think so, soon my friends this will be our reality. Are you ready?

  1. I may do some post grad research on this very thing, if I am accepted. Should be based around helping computers, through experience, recognize complex visual scenes. Think about your computer in your home observing your behavior, and using the information it collects to serve you. Once you get past the initial "creep" factor you should start to see just how powerful this sort of AI can be in the home...

  2. Nice! Interesting idea! I'm looking more into the assisted learning side of AI.
